Chapter 1. Finish the Past

Before creating a life plan and setting new goals, it’s important to finish what you’ve started. Have you set goals before? Make sure to review them thoroughly to see just how far you’ve come.

No matter how big or small, we all make goals in our lives — from small goals, like promising ourselves we want to hang out with friends more often, to bigger goals that change our lives. We are continuously working on personal growth and development. Doing a checkup of your past will give you insights that act as fuel for setting new personal goals.

Chapter 2. Believe in Opportunities

Beliefs are assumptions we hold to be true. They come from real-life experiences. As human beings, our beliefs and values affect our quality of life, our relationships, and our work. What we believe is what we experience, so we tend to think that our beliefs are founded on reality. But beliefs control our experiences.

Our beliefs are an essential and critical part of our identity. Beliefs can be moral, cultural, or religious. Our beliefs are part of us, and reflect who we are. Beliefs are classified into two categories: irrational and rational.

Chapter 3. Find your Why

Simon Sinek, author of the book “Find Your Why,” writes that it is only when you understand your why” that you will be capable of pursuing the things that give you fulfillment. Your “why” (or your life’s purpose) will serve as your point of reference for all decisions and actions from this moment on. It will allow you to measure progress and know when you have met your goals.

The Japanese have a term for this concept: ikigai, which translates to a reason for being.” This is something that gives you a deep sense of purpose in life; what makes life worthwhile. It’s what gets you up in the morning.

Chapter 4. Plan your Future

In the previous chapters, you figured out your core values, core competencies, and personal mission. Now, we’ll collect them and use them as a base to design your future. We’ll focus on creating a long-term plan from which your other goals can be created.

Let’s take a look at the first spreadsheet. At the end of this chapter, we’ll create a personal plan, all on one sheet of paper: “The One Page Life Plan.”

Chapter 5. Set Personal Goals

Goal-setting is a mighty motivator. The value of goal-setting has been identified by numerous studies, in both clinical and real-world settings, for many decades.

Edwin Locke and Gary Latham define goals as “the object or aim of an action, for example, to attain a specific standard of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit.” Goals are the level of competence we wish to achieve — and they create a guide by which we judge our current performance.

Chapter 6. Objectives & Key Results

At this stage, we have set goals for ourselves —  long-term goals and smaller ones we want to achieve this year. For some, this is enough to work with. Others might benefit from a tool to make the one-year goals more actionable.

The “OKR method” is a very valuable tool for creating an action plan. You can break down your one-year goals into specific Objectives and Key Results (actions needed to accomplish objectives), link it to a target date for completion, and monitor your progress.

Chapter 7. Take Action

Setting goals the right way is the first part of the process — and the most important part. This is how we challenge ourselves to develop, learn new skills, and gain personal fulfillment.

How you chase your goals and shape your journey is personal. If you have set goals that inspire you, you’re likely to do whatever is necessary to achieve success. This chapter will give you some guidelines on how you can shape your journey toward success and happiness, and provide some tips and tricks to help you create a success mindset.

Chapter 8. Manage your Time, Priorities and Energy

The most certain pathway to goal achievement lies in the effective management of our time, priorities and energy. If you are a weak time manager, you are going to have a hard time following through with the goals you set for yourself. But if you are a good time manager, you will find it a lot easier to do a little bit every single day to help you move toward your dreams.

The major problem most people face when trying to achieve anything, is getting pulled into time-wasters that diminish our chances of being productive. When you learn how to effectively manage your time, you will be more likely to achieve anything you set your mind to.
